Reflective Edge™

Questions worth staying with.

Some of the most important questions in facilitation do not have quick or simple answers.

They ask us to notice what is happening beneath the surface of our work, examine assumptions we may have stopped questioning, and consider what our experience might be teaching us about facilitation practice.

Reflective Edge™ is an ongoing professional inquiry into those questions.

Through reflective questions, quotations, dilemmas, observations, and stories, Reflective Edge™ invites facilitators, emerging practitioners, and professionals exploring facilitation to pause, think more deeply, and contribute their own experience to the conversation.

Why Reflective Edge™?

Professional practice develops not only through learning new methods and techniques, but through our capacity to reflect on experience, question assumptions, exercise judgement, and remain curious about what we do not yet understand.

The questions may arise from facilitation practice, conversations within the profession, practitioner experience, research, or emerging issues affecting how groups work together.

Some questions may remain primarily personal.

Others may reveal patterns worth exploring collectively.

And some may become the starting point for deeper Action Research, community conversations, articles, or other practitioner knowledge.

Practice & Judgement

Questions about what happens beneath the methods we use—and the professional judgement that shapes our choices.

Assumptions & Perspectives

Invitations to examine assumptions about groups, participation, change, and the facilitator’s role.

Ethics & Responsibility

Dilemmas involving power, voice, inclusion, participation, boundaries, and professional responsibility.

Practitioner Wisdom

Reflections on what experience may be teaching us that formal frameworks do not fully explain.

Emerging Issues

Questions arising from changing workplaces, technology, culture, complexity, and how groups work together.

The Profession

Inquiry into what professional group process facilitation may need to question, preserve, strengthen, or develop next.

The Muse asks…

Each Reflective Edge™ begins with a question worth considering.

What “elephant in the room” must the facilitation profession confront as it enters its next stage of development?

A question may stand on its own, or be accompanied by a quotation, short commentary, story, practitioner observation, or invitation to respond.

You may choose simply to sit with the question.

You may explore it through your own reflective practice.

Or you may add your experience to a wider conversation.

Ways to engage

There is no single way to participate in Reflective Edge™.

Reflect

Stay with the question privately, journal about it, or bring it into your own reflective practice.

Respond

Share a thought, experience, question, or perspective.

Contribute

Add your experience to a survey, practitioner inquiry, or collective exploration.

Convene

Take the question into a team, peer group, association, or community of practice.

Follow the inquiry

Explore the Action Research, articles, conversations, or learning experiences that emerge from the question.

From reflection to practitioner knowledge

Reflective Edge™ is also one of the ways The Facilitators’ Muse™ listens to the field.

When a question generates significant interest, recurring themes, or contrasting perspectives, it may become the beginning of a deeper inquiry.

Reflective Edge™ → Practitioner Responses → Action Research → Community Conversation → Synthesis → Publications or Learning Experiences

In this way, individual reflection can contribute to something larger: a growing body of practitioner knowledge grounded in experience, inquiry, research, and collective wisdom.

A continuing invitation

Reflective Edge™ is not intended to tell facilitators what to think.

It is an invitation to remain curious about our work, examine what experience is teaching us, and contribute to the continuing development of professional facilitation practice.

What are you noticing?

What are you questioning?

And what might become possible if we stay with the question a little longer?
